The History of Cannabis as Medicine in America
There is so much that we don’t know about cannabis because the plant was in prison for so long. Records once kept, are in ancient language and ancient history. Over time, no matter the good that surfaced about cannabis, the government here in America and many other countries made it their mission to suppress it.
Because of hemp legalization, truths are surfacing, ancient documents are surfacing, and research conducted in history and in the dark, and now seeing the light. Here is some information regarding the history of cannabis as medicine in America, but first:
Cannabis has been on record for over 20,000 years, in Central Asia: Mongolia and Siberia.
Cannabis was used in the Bronze Age and during the Roman Empire times- 400 B.C.E.
In American Cannabis history, it goes a little something like this:
Benjamin Franklin used hemp in his paper mill — one of the country’s first — and the first two copies of the Declaration of Independence were supposedly written on hemp paper.
Henry Ford, founder of the Ford Motor Company, created a plastic car in 1941 which ran on hemp and other plant-based fuels, and whose fenders were made of hemp and other materials.
United States Presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson grew hemp, used products made from hemp, and praised the hemp plant in some of their writings.
As for Cannabis as medicine in American history:
Cannabis is thought to have reached the Americas by the 16th century.
The introduction of cannabis in the Western medicine occurred in the midst of the 19th century.
"In the 19th Century, marijuana emerged as a mainstream medicine in the West.
Cannabis was widely utilized as a patent medicine during the 19th and early 20th centuries, described in the United States Pharmacopoeia.
In 1978, New Mexico enacted the first law designed to make marijuana available for medical use.
